Can I get a hallelujah to be off Patreon?!?

I mean, we're still technically ON there, but not for much longer!

Glad the new venue didn't make you any less pedantic Matt ❤️

That place is dead to me ;)

Will "Patreon" dispatches show up there until the move is fully made? Or will there just be none until launch date?

Expand full comment
author

Until the move is fully made, you will experience content like you have been doing so to date -- however you get the free one (perhaps at wethefifth.com!), and then on Patreon for the subscribers-only stuff. When we port over, ALL of those prior episodes will be available (and commentable, for paying subscribers) here, and everything henceforth will be here. Though the free pod will still be everywhere you can find it now.

Hey, as long as we're all loitering, what are we reading around the Ukraine invasion? Me: Anne Applebaum's Red Famine. Shockingly, she did an interview on Fresh Air that was, like, not a hatchet job.

I’m finally reading Bloodlands. Red Famine is on the list as well.

What a great title. Who wrote Bloodlands? Googling now...

Expand full comment

Yes- Timothy Snyder, who has been criticized on tfc, although it seems that they all regard Bloodlands to be thoroughly worthwhile. I agree that it’s a great title. The contents of the book are brutal. It details events in Eastern Europe (roughly 1933-1945) - covering all the atrocities committed by the Nazis AND the Soviets. Ukraine, Poland, Belarus and others were caught it the middle of these two shitbag regimes and the body count is absolutely shocking. Brutal read.

I know! They really got the worst of both extremes. #horseshoe

Thanks Katherine Mangu Ward for introducing me to the image of an ideological horseshoe! #ourladyofreason

Timothy Snyder, it looks like.

Finishing up "Stalin's War" after the MM podcast with the author. Next up is "Post War" by Tony Judt. Found this one after Welch posted a number of books in this vein.

You have the exact same taste in history books as my husband. Off to shop his bookshelf!

The Gates of Europe: A History of Ukraine by Serhii Plokhy. I’m only a few chapters in, but so far it’s a well written account of the history of the region from the Greeks to the current conflict.

Expand full comment

Thanks, Jake! Where did you find out about it?

Expand full comment

Michael had mentioned it on a recent episode, so I looked at reviews and there seems to be a consensus that the book is a relatively unbiased account of the history. The revised edition actually includes a chapter about the current conflict, so the book is highly relevant. Definitely give it a try if you are interested in the historical roots of the conflict.

Erika’s book Sovietstan is really good also

Hello new Fifdom Substackers! Ileana and I interviewed Matt on the Fifth Column Community Pod about the move. Worth a listen while we wait for things to propagate here. :D

Great to hear MCM mention Shane Gillis. My 3 favorite podcasts are TFC, Matt and Shanes Secret Podcast, and Tim Dillon. Damn, I was JUST in NYC. If I had known Moynihan, Coleman, AND Shane would be in the same building I would've dropped all other plans. Fuck.

Doing a bit of a happy dance to see you off the non-user-friendly platform and onto Substack! You never read my mail anymore so I just pretend it's because Patreon's messaging system was so whack rather than admitting to myself that my emails just aren't that smart or interesting ;)

A lot of times it's just luck-of-the-draw in terms of timing (like, tonight we're supposed to record a Patreon, and so we'll read from emails sent over the past 72 hours.....).
