Finnish time zone supremacy! But I'm in Israel so it's Israel supremacy for me.

I was on a group text (yes I hate them too) and two of us were in Finland and Israel and we’d intentionally clog up the text with messages while everyone else was trying to sleep

Hahaha we have that too!

I guess it's best he doesn't read these comments.

Thanks lads - I read the NYT and Guardian reviews of Nellie’s book, and though not generally surprised at the tenor, I am bamfoozled (just made that up) at how poorly written and conceived both are. In the former, one of the authors chief complaints is that Nellie Bowles is nasty and vicious. Meanwhile, the tone of the review is clearly that of a pissed off writer, hardly objective, the review feels almost personal, like Nellie insulted her mom or something. The latter review comes off similarly pissed, and devolves into educating us on “facts” about trans people, of course without citing a source for these facts, the same charge the author cites Bowles for. There is also an air of superiority and moral certainty in each of these reviews, the same air I’m sure that polluted the NYT ahead of Bari and Nellie’s departure.

I’ve not gotten to read her book yet, but if it’s anything like her TGIF column I expect to thoroughly enjoy it - she is sharp and hilarious. I think the big picture here is that die hard lefty’s can’t stand when their own defect to a more reasoned and nuanced “side”, especially when that defection comes with success and the praise of a much more diverse readership than that of these aggrieved reviewers.

The NYT review definitely was personal. Bari and Nellie are just the enemy over there now, and it is both political and personal.

I found the Guardian review an ironic example of what is wrong with journalism. The whole thing had that straw-man vibe where the writer assumes that their point of view is correct and then berates their opponent for not acknowledging the obviousness of it. Like the people whose take on the Hamilton Hall story was "well I guess protest is now illegal on college campuses". Uh, your missing some key points.

Yea super personal, and just super unprofessional. They read like angry children who can’t believe people have opinions and experience things different than theirs

And people wonder why we think modern journalism is a joke

From what I've learned this week, most women would rather ride the subway with a bear

Expand full comment

I thought Moynihan was a bear, in the gay sense.

Expand full comment

Nah, Moynihan is more the metrosexual type who’d join a ballet group pretending to be gay so he could bang the dancers. “OMG I’ve never done this before!”

No way. That guy's an otter.

My compulsion to post a relevant link is torn between Always Sunny and Silicon Valley.

“Please note that double-Moynihanning is illegal in most US states and territories. If you have engaged in this activity within the last 72 hours, you are urged to seek immediate medical attention.”

As long as double-dipping Dana is still allowed I am good.

Well shit, I garnered a two-fer on the Firehose! I have since reread my journal from that trip. Jesus, I was young. And it was David for Fete de la Musique in 2000 (avec Oasis et Shola Ama). https://musique.rfi.fr/musique/20000619-fete-musique-2000

Also, Nellie was also on Bill Maher just yesterday. She has such a great voice. Haven't checked out the new book yet, but I'm hoping she's reading the audio version.

A-A-ron! So happy for you, big guy! Congratulations!

Came here to ask this question as well.

The Moyn subway photo looks like Cillian Murphy and Eric Roberts had a baby that went on to break its nose several times. Unclear if the nose was broken due to big mouth at bars or overeagerness to get a nostril to the coffee table to do a line.

Ugh…of course NYT, WaPo, New Yorker, etc have to be predictably shitty about Nellie’s book.

Is the second Sunday zoom thing available for premium subscribers or only the highest level subscribers?

Expand full comment

Either way it won't be available for us basketball fans.😢

Expand full comment

We can generate some real heat in the comments around hockey but we clearly just don't care about basketball.

Help me out with this reference lol. I’m obviously not a basketball fan.

Tonight at 5 is game 7(final game) of the Western Conference semi-finals between the Minnesota Timberwolves and Denver Nuggets. Many people consider these teams the best two in basketball and the series has been incredibly crazy so far, so fans are really looking forward to seeing how this game goes

Ohhhh ok! That sounds so fun actually!

First of all Aaron Monheim "love swells in the heart of the American bear!" for the good news. Second, my copy of Nellie's book came in the mail yesterday but the main thing standing between me and reading it is the never ending stream of her on every single pod in the universe. :D Before this last week or so I couldn't pick her out of a line-up, even being an avid reader of TGIF since the git. But now I hear her voice in my head whenever it gets quiet. Congrats to Nellie, I think the book is going to do pretty good. I mean the only reason I bought the book was because she basically said I had to, but I am sure I will appreciate it when I finally clear out the mind spiders long enough to digest sentences. :D
