I sent my entire family (so like thirty Hondurans) the Killer Mike speech.

Moynihan's turn on Bill Maher was excellent! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCg2dFF5rKw

Great end to a rough week. Killer Mike’s speech AND Moynihan on Real Time. Heck yeah!

I saw a copy of Moynihan’s rider for Real Time. It included:

-Every John Lewis Gaddis book (first edition preferable)

-All the scotch (if you have to ask “from where,” you haven’t bought enough)

- Vape cartridges smuggled in from a country where they are still legal (preferably Cuba or Venezuela)

-Shoes (did you see what I was wearing on the DeSantis panel?)

-Set of educational CDs on how to record Zoom calls.

Now that Moynihan is making money as a Vice Truther, can we unsubscribe and get a refund if the Bruins blow this?

Did Elon offer Moynihan a job? Did Kmele fly out as a +1? There are questions!

🚨NYC Fifthdom, this is not a test! Monday, May 1 (doors at 6pm), Nick Gillespie of Reason fame is interviewing Ben Smith in midtown. The cookie spread alone is worth the trip. Great interview with Vivek Ramaswamy on ReasonTV, led by the Nick G and Zach W. As a bemused Brit looking on at the likely D vs R candidates, I'd be interested to know what you boys (and other Fifdom fans based in the States) think of this long shot...

I listened to the pod. Much like their favored LP candidate, there was a lot to cheer, and other things that evoked a “eek.” I don’t know. Being in the blue-again-just-as-the-Byrd-organization-intended Virginia, I think I’ll be voting again against the worst candidate. Unfortunately, I’m doubting that’ll LP candidate.

On a somewhat-related note, I was able to get some Chatanooga stuff other than from the Commonwealth, @kmele.

I watched Maher. Dunno. Lots of scrambling to justify this administration. Yes, Trump started the Afghanistan pull out. But the nuts-and-bolts of what turned into Saigon II were all Biden. (And if political ads still worked in this age of ballot-harvesting, a savvy GOP ad would drop the Thursday before Election Day with video of the CH46/7s ferrying people out....which was 1975, and which was 2021?) DiFi’s absence only matters because of what Harry Reid did with cloture, and the Democrats’ subsequent filibuster of Gorsuch.

And it sounds like things are really hairy in Sudan. Something like 15K US citizens on the ground and the embassy has closed.

I kno. I know. This is the US’s fault because Yemen. /LPMC.

And CBS had a story on it. Guy who made his way on his own.....after no answer from the embassy.

Looking forward to Moynihan on Real Time tonight. Enjoy the weekend, Fifdom.

As a FIRE member, I really loved both Killer Mike's address and the interview, both of which I caught up with on YouTube. Sounds like it was a great evening! But as a septuagenarian guy living in Appalachia, not likely to make a Gala unless they move around the country. Five bucks says I would have been the only wildlife biologist (retired) in attendance.

Michael was f’ing hysterical on Bill’s show! Truly enjoyed it.

You could tell that Bill really enjoyed him.

I'm too lazy to actually go look... But is there a clip of RFK saying "Black Lives Matter" somewhere out there? Bc that's probably the only thing he could say that would give his new libertarian fans the ick.

I miss 2003 Tucker. This article (https://www.esquire.com/news-politics/a450/esq1103-nov-liberia-rev/) about his trip with Al Sharpton et al. to Africa is brilliant and funny. Crossfire was a national treasure, fuck Jon Stewart. Here's a clip from that year where Hillary Clinton makes Tucker "eat his shoe" because he swore her book would never sell 1 million copies (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejAX6ZgHbkE).

Is there any show nowadays where liberals and conservatives laugh together in between serious debates about politics? I'm seriously asking - I quit watching cable news for good on February 8, 2007.

Oops, I think I meant to comment on the latest episode, not the Workin for the Weekend post. So. Much. Content.

Not a cable show (pod/YouTube), but The DMZ with Matt Lewis and Bill Scher is very amicable. That said, I haven’t listened in about a year because imo Bill was becoming increasingly shrill & irrational about certain things.

Good to know. I'm not sure I would enjoy a show like that these days - back in '03 I was a pretty staunch liberal so I at least agreed with one of them. But I do think something like that would benefit most cable news viewers, who don't get an accurate picture of their opponents.

I get the feeling government reaction to COVID broke a lot of brains in the libertarian sphere. It seems that instead of agreeing with commentators on their opposition to things like lockdowns or school shutdowns, they bought into their whole ideology; Jeffrey Tucker being an excellent case. No only has he come to praise RFK; he is now an apologist for Tucker Carlson. He even compares Carlson to Edmond Burke while specifically praising some of the conspiracies he espoused. https://www.theepochtimes.com/the-fearless-tucker-carlson-gets-the-last-laugh_5225742.html

Maybe I shouldn’t be surprised: I remember attending a few International Students For Liberty conferences and he was always hanging around with what seemed to be high school aged girls. Even back then I found that creepy.

apropo of nothing, as the kids like to say, the latest episode of 'the glenn show' has been removed from youtube due to 'hate speech' according to some guy on twitter. i checked & the show is definitely not on yt right now. haven't listened to the episode yet, but the show notes indicate that mcwhorter gives his thoughts on transgenderism for the first time.

Dang! I listen as a podcast so didn’t know that episode got flagged. Nothing unusual stood out to me. John brought up transgender stuff because it’s in the guest’s book. He even mentioned that they never talk about it on the show.

i listened to it while out on my bike ride this morning, & i didn't think there was anything the least bit controversial in anything anyone said. it all sounded like the kind of criticism you'd hear in helen joyce's book, or from abigail shrier.

i am incredulous that kind of mild criticism warrants a yt removal. seems pathetic to me.

Glenn’s statement on the matter: https://open.substack.com/pub/glennloury/p/i-feel-therefore-i-am-repost?r=7enhd&utm_medium=ios&utm_campaign=post

He says in another post that YT has already rejected his appeal to reinstate the video.

Expand full comment

thanks - i haven't quite managed to break my twitter habit, & kept checking there to see if glenn had responded, and feel very silly that i never did the obvious thing & checked his substack.

Expand full comment

That is curious. Has YT removed any of his shows before? He’s had Amy Wax on a few times, whom I would not describe as uncontroversial.

Expand full comment

i checked and three episodes with wax, which i 'think' are all the times she's been on, are still on yt, including their iq discussion.

i'm guessing there was probably a complaint or a coordinated series of complains made, & yt took it down out of a sense of hyper-caution. another person on loury's twitter page thinks that a facebook 'critical thinking' group might have reported the show en masse.

all seems very silly to me. i'd like to think that it will get added back once someone actually listens to the show & finds there's nothing the least bit offensive there, but who knows?
