Early! That’s even better. Thank you, sir.

Dude. That Christian Cooper video was depressing. The lady to his left acting like she's in church hearing someone talk shit about Jesus, Cooper pointedly not answering the question, and then all the idiots in the crowd applauding his bravery made me feel a bit queasy.

Depressing, indeed. The “Extraordinary Birder” and his flock.

At least no one tried to shout down Kmele? (Looking for something, anything, to provide a small counterweight to your good observation.)

That Hitchens clip is unbelievable. I’ve probably watched it thirty times over the past decade or so and it never gets old. His cadence alone is absolutely masterful.

New subscriber here. First time poster.

Kmele: Thank you for having the guts to stand up and ask that question. The applause at the end of the clip shows just how “in the tank” the people at this event were. A very scary level of group think there. It takes some level of bravery to stand out and question it. One follow up question to Mr Cooper: You say “...the bottom line is she chose to inject race into that situation...” My simple question is how did you know that? Are you sure YOU weren’t injecting race into the situation?

Matt: You sound like a 20 something on the podcast but look considerably older on TV! 😂 I guess I have you to thank for making me watch CNN and reminding me what a horrible network it is and always has been. I loved the bullshit bingo terms like “problematic” (that legal person said it five or more times) that are thrown around to signal who the “good guys” are. One thing I thought about this segment was where were these people when ALL social media was under leftist control? Right of center opinions were being suppressed constantly. Leftist have no clue how censorship can easily be turned against them by an out of control federal government. That kind of shallow thinking ends up creating so much bad policy. You were kind of outnumbered on that panel, so your points got watered down and co-opted. At least you were trying to talk sense into these cretins!

Finally, the Christopher Hitchens video is life changing. Thank you for sharing it. I’m sending it to everyone I know.

Just re-watched CNN clip. Don’t know the details of the lawsuit. But on principle, I’m frustrated (horrified) that journalists are so pro government agencies choosing who gets to speak and what can be said. It all seems predicated on this idea that “we all know” misinformation and disinformation are dangerous. So am erroneous or inflammatory post gets amplified. That’s not evidence of danger.

CNN needs a better legal expert. She seemed unaware of the other plaintiffs, specifically censored by government demand, as well as the state politicians in the complaint. Yeah, It’s 155 pages...but maybe read it all bf passing judgement on standing and the decision on appeal.

When I see a journalist call your position here “kooky,” I don’t even know what world I am living in. They can’t even acknowledge any possible downside to censorship on social media platforms.

You got me to watch a full CNN segment, which I probably haven’t done since Leon Harris and sexy Daryn Kagan were anchors.

“This category of journalists for more speech regulation” was a great, if sadly accurate line by Welch. He and the gentleman seated second from right were the only ones making sense. I’m glad they were invited.

It’s amusing to watch panelists take umbrage at the mere suggestion that they’re not brave, free speech warriors i.e. the good guys, and only want AGENTS OF THE GOVERNMENT to curb “dangerous” or “problematic” “misinformation” and “disinformation” — all words I’d gladly go the rest of my life never hearing or reading again. Yes, even “dangerous.” Is there any doubt they would sing a different tune if it we’re a republican administration putting the pressure on the social media nets?

It’s also funny how they act as though a libertarian is a member of some recently discovered tribe whose culture and language are completely foreign to them.

Finally, I’ve decided that when I’m in a group conversation, I’m now going to leave the table to present my points with graphics and a tagline.

I’m joking. I never have group conversations. Or conversations.

Yes. If a Republican administration applied the same hidden pressures to social media companies, the left would be screaming about censorship. And poor Matt would still have to sit on this panel explaining the importance of principle over political. But at least he can say, “I told you so”.

Agreed. The failure of hindsight and imagination is bizarre. Seems symptomatic of presuming their authority, then assuming they will hold that authority in perpetuity. Hitchens was a welcomed chaser after that bilge.

There needs to be a QAnon-style label for people like Cooper and others who are so conspiratorial-minded that they ascribe ugly motives and deep-seated bias to everyone's behavior (except their own, of course).

Ok I haven’t brought this up in many places, but it’s occurred to me. If rfk’s anti vax stuff is a conspiracy theory (and I firmly believe it is), would we not also say the 1619 project/blm/everything everywhere is white supremacy thing is a conspiracy theory? John mcwhorter calls it a religion, but I almost think it’s more accurately described as a conspiracy theory. It has all the hallmarks: ascribing agency where things could just be emergent or coincidence, dismissing facts that don’t agree with the predetermined conclusion, moving the goalposts, blending in true things but twisting their meaning, lack of epistemic closure, etc. What say you guys?

Kmele has used that language several times previously.

I like that idea, but I’m also hesitant to deploy the term “conspiracy theorist” largely because it’s a thought-terminating cliche. “You’re telling me that ALL those priests, bishops, and cardinals have been lying to me? What are you, some kind of conspiracy theorist Galileo?”

It's wild to watch him talk about how "a lot of good things happened as a result" of the incident - yeah, for you, you myopic, selfish prick!

It had such a tone-deaf "this is fine" ethos that I expected to see the room start burning down around them while a coffee-sipping dog (on a leash, of course!) pulled up a chair

I strongly recommend Matt’s appearance in House of Strauss! They got into Matt’s early life and career in some pretty interesting ways. Did you know, he once lived in Prague?!

Seriously though, I enjoyed it a lot. In 500 or so TFC episodes, we haven’t gotten such a deep dive into Matt’s formative experiences as a young man in the post-Soviet empire, nor his time trying to reestablish himself as a journalist in America.

Also, apparently Matt didn’t drop out of college? He was expelled! And if the Matt Welch episode isn’t enough to justify the cost of a monthly subscription to HOS, there are recent interviews with Moynihan and Katie Herzog.

What’s really depressing, is that Cooper’s answer was likely completely satisfactory to the majority of that audience. In fact, they probably saw him as completely dunking on Kmele.

They all clapped. Meanwhile all I could think about was the Billy Madison quote, “....at no point in your incoherent rambling did you even attempt to answer the question”

I noticed the mention of the historian Johann N. Neem in the most recent episode. While I also enjoyed his latest in The Hedgehog Review, I'd recommend one of his bygone essays in that publication more highly: https://hedgehogreview.com/issues/monsters/articles/unbecoming-american I thought so highly of it at the time that I interviewed him about it

“The consistent libertarianism I always appreciate…” Wow. Respect to Welch for not feeding Avlon his own smug-flavored fist. Those patronizing arm pats…

And the smiling, as if to say, “That’s cute.”

His weird ‘Reality Check’ segment-within-the-segment? Preposterous. Reality according to him. Let’s call it his “lived reality.”

Right?!?! That transition was very “Now that we’re all settled in here, let me tell you about this amazing timeshare opportunity…” We’re all upside down in a condo of John Avlon’s lived reality.

Ha! Brilliant.

Also, the host’s, “Okay, you can rejoin us at the table,” or words to that effect. “Alright, John, you got your 3 minutes. Happy?”

I loved how the 'Reality Check' was calling out a single sock puppet that duped some people as proof of the "outrage machine".

But didn't actually check with the reality that Twitter only matters to the couple thousand journaloes that use it to avoid actually doing their jobs.

I was curious what the sign language interpreter would do with Kmele's name in the Christian Cooper video. She spelled it "Camil." Interpreting can be a tough gig and you have to think fast. That was probably as good a guess as any.
