Bari Weiss Derangement Syndrome is real.

Bari Weiss's substack commenter's Derangement Syndrome is real too.

As in all ideological movements, a heretic is worse than an infidel, and Bari dares to question the orthodoxy.

It must be confusing for them... How can they attack her without it being misogynistic, but they are kind of ok with it because she’s Jewish. So they call her right wing because that should offend her because she isn’t... all these rules are so hard to follow.

Damn, Ed Stasium is a gosh-darn hero. Tim was always my favorite, but this version just kicks your teeth in, steals your girlfriend, gets the band a jet (which of course, given the Mats, meets a fiery end when Tommy and Westie fight over who's flying ) and a VH1 Behind The Music story circa 2002.

Wait, who are we kidding, this changes nothing. They still would've shot a video of nothing but a speaker, give us all the middle finger and find everyway to fuck it up. It's the way of the world.

While continuing my binging of old patreon episodes i saw I had a new episode of Bari’s podcast in the queue. Switching to that, you can imagine my initial confusion upon hearing more Moynihan...

"are they gaffes or lies?" 🔥🔥🔥

But seriously, this guy is doing pr for Biden dressed up as nuance

I think he’s doing it for access and another book

And he didn’t act like an asshole! Was it really Michael Moynihan or his AI?

At least M got Foer to admit he never interviewed Biden. I listened to audiobook with sensation of being in alternate reality. Biden’s sharp thinking as POTUS feels as false as Prince Harry musing about an undiscovered country in his (ghostwritten) autobiography. Who will be Biden’s future ghostwriter? Foer?

OMG, when I first came to LA my wife told me about Jumbo's Clown Room. She thinks that might be where she saw a co-worker perform. Some girl named Courtney Like, or Love, or Hate. One of those.

Years ago Franklin Foer wrote a book called How Soccer Explains The World. It's an interesting look at sectarianism and globalisation through the lens of football.

Until the penultimate chapter, where he tells the story of a Chelsea hooligan who is the son of a Jewish nurse and a Nazi soldier, who went on to join the army, fight at football matches, have a sojourn working in video games in Oakland, before becoming a mercenary in the Balkans. It's such an obviously bullshit story to be taken in by, you wonder how much of the rest of the book, and Foer's other work, is bollocks.

The middle parts were interesting in a gossipy sort of way (ie who are Biden’s handlers willing to throw under bus ) but I skipped past intro and stopped listening during epilogue

I appreciate the degree of dishonesty in the LA hitpiece against Bari et al. The NY version was less dishonest and more beautiful, but still could not hide their disgust. This is good. I hope more discussions like that occur. Only nugget from their critiques I took was that next time greater levels of disagreement can be found. Issue is, one side has a lot less people willing to come to the table at all.

I’m Bari Weiss agnostic and I didn’t watch the “debate” but I did read the reviews that Matt posted. I came away feeling that both the Intelligencer and Substack pieces were well written and reasonable. While there does seem to be a group that gets frothy over Weiss’ work there also seems to be a new tribal culture of an (stealing from this podcast) “anti-anti-Bari” sentiment.

Like other cultural groupings this group has approved humor (Tim Dillon jokes), humor that “isn’t very funny” (oddly jokes about Republicans). They also get bristly about criticism of their icons.

All of this is, in my insignificant opinion, totally normal human behavior. People organize themselves in groups of similar values. They defend others who share their values. People also don’t like criticism because…who does? I think the observation(?) about this group is the insistence that 1.) there is no group and 2.) maybe there is a group but the shared value is open exchange of ideas 3.) but under no circumstances should #2 be criticism of Bari Weiss

All of that being said the critique that journalists have lost their ability to function when covering certain issues and people remains which is why the good ol Fifth is around. However, it’s equally important to recognize good stuff (Intelligencer) as it is to be brave and call bullshit (sorry LA Times).

I’m paraphrasing, but an eye-opening sentence I came across many years ago was along the lines of, “humans have the misfortune of being the only herd animal that can talk to one another”.

I’ve found myself thinking of that frequently over the last couple years.
